(A story about balance, focus, and flight in unsettled times)
When the Wind Howls
There are days when the headlines whip like a sudden gust… interest rate meetings at the Fed, political storms, even the shock of clickbait. The sky feels unsettled, and it’s easy to stand there, immobilized and watching it all, and feel far too small.
Sudden Tragedy and Slow Momentum Shifts
It is a sorrowful thing, then, to see whole segments of our culture treating another’s catastrophe as spectacle. Why would anyone want the failure of others, or the extinguishing of life itself? A thriving society should never laugh or cheer at collapse, death, or loss as though it were sport. Such responses are ugly and disheartening at the least. This seems a momentum pointed entirely the wrong way… a misguided turn of events in history.

I, for one, want to see our communities thriving… improving. We must strive towards creating ways to converse openly and with kindness. I want to see us all, as Americans, listening to each other, learning from many varying perspectives and from each other’s unique experiences, and finding actual, practical solutions -locally and nationally- using knowledge, logic, and facts.
And what if feeling small isn’t the same as being powerless? A kite, after all, is small too; fragile fabric stretched thin, light wood, a length of string. It cannot still the wind or command its direction. Yet in the right hands, with steady focus and a clear anchor, a kite can rise. It can even dance.

The truth is, no one will succeed at the task of pulling against the whole sky. But each of us was given a string to hold. And it is in the daily way each of us makes our own choices that we grip that kite string (how we clear distractions, choose our focus, and keep tugging steadily) and our own legacy begins to take shape.
When the World Feels Too Big
Here is a little inspiration to help enact momentum shifts in your career, actions towards personal goals, and especially in your own personal & daily practical life.
Step One: Clearing the Field
A kite cannot lift in tangled branches. In the same way, we cannot rise when caught in the clutter of too many obligations, endless news scrolls, or digital noise. The first act of strength is subtraction; not addition.
Clearing space is not about withdrawal from the world, but about creating open air for what matters most. It is the deliberate pruning that allows growth. Just as a farmer cuts back weeds to ready a field, we cut away distraction so purpose can take root.
Step Two: Finding the String
A kite has only one tether; its strength and steadiness come from that single line. We too find power in narrowing our focus to one thing… a pursuit, a project, or a value that anchors us in a gusty world.
The question to ask is simple but hard: What is my one thing? Not ten things at once; not every possibility stretched thin. But the one line worth holding. When we discover it, our energy stops scattering and starts lifting.
Step Three: Letting It Rise
Legacy is not one dramatic launch into the sky. It is built in the steady pull of many small actions, day after day. Each tug adds altitude; each step compounds.
This is where boldness matters. Grant Cardone calls it the 10X Rule… acting with ten times the effort we think we need. Jon Acuff reminds us in Do Over that sometimes the line slackens and we must begin again, re-tying the knot with courage. Mike Michalowicz, in The Pumpkin Plan, teaches the discipline of pruning; cutting away lesser pursuits so one strong idea has the chance to soar. And Ed Mylett’s The Power of One More whispers the truth that often it is just one more tug… one more act of persistence… that makes the difference.
Holding the String
We cannot quiet the wind. We cannot command the sky. But we can decide where to plant our feet and how firmly to grip the line. Legacy is not only measured by the scale of the storm we withstand, but also by the steady, faithful way we keep the kite aloft.

So ask yourself today: What is the string I’m choosing to hold? And what small pull will I make to lift it higher?
